Laser For Black Skin
African-American skin care is unique and one that requires specialized care and training. Black skin presents its own issue called Pseudofolicullitis barbae, which is often referred to as “ razor bumps” or “ ingrown hair.” Approximately 80% of African-American men suffer from razor bumps on a daily basis. Ingrown hairs or razor bumps are a result of shaving. Etiology of Pseudofolliculitis barbae ( ingrown hairs) appears post shaving.
The hairs that were just cut by the razor are only removed above the surface of the skin leaving the follicles under the skin to curl and burrow underneath the skin. The hairs are coarse and the ends are sharp which explain the irritated bumpy appearance.
Symptoms and signs of ingrown hairs:
The ingrown hairs itch, burn and in many cases cause scarring and make shaving almost and impossible task. Black skin care is unique, it presents its own issues, and its own good thing too! Black men for example suffer two of the most well known issues with black skin. Did you know that around 85% of men have to deal with razor bumps everyday?
Do women suffer from “ ingrown hairs”?
More and more African-American women present with the appearance of razor bumps because of an over production of hormones which causes excessive hair growth ( hirsutism).
Are there solutions to help with “ ingrown hairs”?
Absolutely! Laser hair reduction treatments for black to dark skin permanently reduce and/or destroy hair growth. The great news is that the FDA has cleared a laser technology by the name of CoolGlide ™ which is the only laser technology approved to treat men and women of Indian and African-American ancestry without causing discoloration to skin’s pigment. CoolGlide ™ is the only laser technology approved to treat White, Hispanic, Oriental, Mediterranean, Indian or African-American skin.
In the meantime, some home remedies are:
1. Be sure to use a clean blade at all times. If you have a bad case of razor bumps we recommend that you use a new double bladed after each use. If you use an electric shaver, replace the rotary blades accordingly.
2. Shave following the direction of the hair growth.
3. Avoid skin irritation by eating well. Foods that contain lots of fat, oil, cholesterol or sodium make your skin prone to damage.
